The book begins by exploring the extent and way of history writing and major historiographical trends in African and Eritrean history. A probe is also held into state of archaeology, and nature of archaeological research and administration in Eritrea. Thereafter, the discussion on landscape pattern, general ecological condition, demographic composition, and nature of population of Eritrea follows. The historical reconstruction begins by tracing out the developments during Prehistoric phase in the area and surrounding. The present work deals with extremely rich Eritrean rock art. The developments in Asmara and neighbouring region and other parts of Eritrea before the Aksumite phase are also discussed. The importance and enormous influence of Adulis in the region has been discussed under the heading Adulite Era. The historical events during the glorious period of Aksumite civilization have also been explained. The history of Bejas, massive population movements, and Islamic expansion in Post-Aksumite phase constitutes important segment of the book. The work finally ends with an evaluation of the present state of heritage in Eritrea, its governance and management, and future prospects, and challenges.
