The book is a biography of the well known social activist, Murlidhar Devidas Amte, better known as Baba Amte. His is a riches to rags story. He created Anandwan for the leprosy affected, Hemalkasa for the tribals and 27 such centers for the poor, the handicapped, the neglected, the lost and the sick. Baba Amte and his family have been honoured with several national and international awards and his work has been recognized by the world.

Baba Amte was born the eldest son of a rich zamindar of Warora in Maharashtra. Seeing a leprosy affected patient in the last stages of life changed the course of his life and he started the Maharogi Sewa Samiti at Anandwan, a hundred kms from Nagpur. Today, more than half a century later Baba Amte has handed over his legacy to sons Vikas and Prakash and now the third generation is ready to step into his shoes. The book is in four parts dealing with Baba Amte’s story; Anandwan; Hemalkaasa and other communes.

About Author

Dr. Veena Adige is a journalist who has been writing for nearly forty years. She worked as the Assistant Editor of The Hitavada Daily newspaper of Nagpur and as the Associate Editor of Bhavan's Journal of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. She is also the Joint Secretary of Bhavan's Navi Mumbai Kendra.
